Network for Assin Development Appeal to National House of Chiefs to restore Protracted Chieftaincy Disputes in Assin

Over the years we the people of Assin land have experience chieftaincy dispute in our land, as a results of these it has created a lot of problems for the people of Assin and has also affected development in the area.

Our Survey has revealed that there are no chiefs in many of the ‘Big’ towns in Assin land after the demise of a number of chiefs in the area. This has denied Assin land proper developmental growth.

For instance for over 40 years Assin Akropong has never installed a single chief in the area. Just recently a purported installation of a chief in the community brought about various factions that created misunderstandings among some families.

The much talked about and renowned town like Assin Fosu has no chief for over 10 years not to mention other towns like Assin Ahenkro and Assin Manson.

To add insult to injury, the TUTU festival, which is an occasion to unite and foster development in Assin Fosu has not been celebrated for the last 30 years as a result of chieftaincy disputes.

As a Network we believe that a properly installed chiefs in Assin Land will help in the development of our communities.

We are therefore demanding that the Institutions such as the National House of chiefs, Central regional House of chiefs, the central regional minister as well as the Peace Council as a matter of urgency should endeavour to restore lasting peace.

Again, we are also calling on all stakeholders, opinion leaders and all concerned citizens of Assin to help bring a closure to the matter.

Additionally, we are given the national House of Chiefs an ultimatum of six months to address some of these pressing chieftaincy disputes that has bedevilled our communities for all this while.

Network for Assin Development (NAD) will not hesitate to mount pressure on all the stakeholders involved particularly, the National House of Chiefs if they fail to address our grievances.

As Mahatma Ghandhi says An eye for an eye will only make the world go blind.
