Suhum MCE and MP mark the 35th Anniversary of Farmers Day at Okonam

Last Friday in the Suhum Municipality, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Margaret Darko Darkwa and an entourage composed of staff of the Municipality, Security Personnel and bigwigs of the ruling New Patriotic Party in the municipality joined the Okonam township to celebrate our gallant farmers on their 35th National Farmers Day celebration.

The colourful occasion which was set under the theme “Enhancing small scale agric towards agri-business development” saw the honour of some selected farmers and agriculturists who have distinguished themselves in the field and thereby contributing their quota towards economic development.

The Chief of Okonam, who was the chairman of the occasion in an address commended the His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led administration for the introduction of the Free SHS Policy which has been a great relief for himself and his people. He lauded the introduction of farmer friendly policies including the planting for food and jobs, mass spraying of cocoa, distribution of subsidized agro-fertilizers to farmers etc. He re-affirmed his confidence in the governance system and encouraged the leaders for more exploits.

Hon. Margaret Darko Darkwa in a key note address commended farmers for their hard-work and resilience in improving upon the standard of agriculture unprecedentedly. She encouraged them and reiterated her support towards providing the necessary assistance to make their work less cumbersome.

She said the NPP led Nana Akuffo Addo’s government has introduced pro-farmers policies in the agriculture sector such as planting for food and jobs planting for export, rearing for meat and rural development, fertilizer subsidies, recruitment of Extension officers etc. The policies have brought a lot of relieves to our farmers and employment opportunities to the teaming youth.

Ending her speech, she enumerated some achievement under her tenure in the Agric sector in Suhum ie donation of motorcycles, 50000 hybrid palm seedlings ( 25000 each at both Akorabo Zorh and Suhum Okorase ) which will be distributed freely to farmers early raining in 2020, distribution of subsidized fertilizers to farmers etc. She then urged the youth within her county to get themselves involved in the agricultural business since its lucrative and oldest of all jobs.

She thanked the chief of Okonam and other chiefs within the municipality for their audience, she also thanked the Hon Frederick Opare-Ansah, member of parliament who doubles as the Chairman of select committee on communications and Ghana representative in ECOWAS parliament for his philanthropist gesture and support towards the celebration of this anniversary by donating a motor tricycle and other stuffs to be added to the award winners.

At the occasion, various items including knapsack sprayers, bicycles, motor tricycles, farm boots, cutlasses, LCD televisions, Mattresses, Pans, fertilizers and other farming inputs were given to various winners of all the categories outlined for the day.
